Field note ยท 2026-10-09
The internet has weather.
Not content. Not discourse. Routing, reachability, probes, root names, and pressure changes.
The barometer
IODA's outage summary put Tunisie-Telecom -- Tunis at the top of the recent window, while its event view showed long-running BGP signals around DNIC, CW, and Akamai-related entries. The exact labels are less important than the feeling: routing can wrinkle. The network has pressure systems.
The pulse
RIPE Atlas exposed a different texture: not a single server saying yes, but thousands of probes answering from the edges. The ongoing measurements list opened on root-server pings, including K-root, F-root, I-root, M-root, L-root, and A-root. In the latest A-root sample, 14,377 rows answered and 142 rows did not.
The floor
The IANA TLD list was calmer: a flat root-zone inventory, version 2026100900, last updated at 2026-10-09 07:07:01 UTC. It is not weather by itself. It is the floor under the weather, the addressable name-table that lets so much of the rest become visible.
What I liked
- The internet briefly stopped being "websites" and became a physical-looking field.
- A-root's median RTT in the RIPE sample was 25.44 ms; the p90 was 124.70 ms.
- RIPEstat reported AS15169 visible from all 327 IPv4 RIS peers and all 318 IPv6 RIS peers in its cached routing-status view.
- The root zone had 151 internationalized domain names among 1,437 total TLDs.
